The Board of Trustees is responsible for selecting and appointing our president. To assist in making the best decision, the Board has appointed a search committee, engaged a highly qualified search firm, Spencer Stuart, and implemented a rigorous search process that has included the collection of extensive community input. The search committee will recommend candidates to the Board of Trustees; from this group of recommended candidates, the Board will select the next president.
The Board established a Steering Committee to review and implement best practices for the search process. Working in conjunction with David Beirne, chair of the Nominating Committee and general partner of X10 Capital, the Steering Committee determined the membership of the Search Committee, which is composed of trustees and faculty representatives. The Steering Committee sought to ensure that the Search Committee would be comprised of members bringing diverse perspectives to the search process and the evaluation of candidates. The Board of Trustees appointed 11 distinguished individuals to join the search co-chairs, William J. Conaty ’67 and Dr. Patricia O’Brien P’15. The list of search committee members includes:

- Rita Williams-Bogar '76, member of the Board of Trustees
Additionally, Tim Paige, Vice President for Human Resources, will serve as an ex-officio member of the search committee.
The search committee is actively working with the search firm to evaluate candidates, bringing the views of their constituencies to bear, and to recommend candidates to the Board of Trustees.
We are extremely pleased to be partnering with Spencer Stuart, a preeminent global executive search firm with a proven track record of success coupled with extensive experience leading high-level searches, including many searches for college and university presidents. The firm will help to guide and support the search process in all its phases. So far this has included facilitating listening sessions and a community survey, developing a compelling position profile, reaching into extensive networks to attract highly desirable candidates, and conducting due diligence on those individuals. We have strong confidence in their ability to help us conduct a highly effective search. The search committee, not the search firm, decides which candidates move forward in the process.
With the position specification in mind, Spencer Stuart and the search committee have reviewed many candidates that have been referrals from members of the extended Bryant community. Additionally Spencer Stuart has engaged in extensive candidate outreach.
Selecting Bryant University’s next president is a critically important endeavor that will bring change to our community as well as opportunity and renewed vision for Bryant’s future. We will take the time necessary to identify the best candidate to move the University forward. We will proceed expeditiously but not rush the process. We are pleased with our progress to date.
- On May 6, President Ronald Machtley announced his decision to retire after graduation in May 2020.
- On June 5, the Board of Trustees established a steering committee to implement best practices for the search process.
- By June 28, the steering committee completed its work of selecting a search firm, Spencer Stuart, and an announcement was made about the composition of the search committee. The first meeting of the committee took place on July 25.
- Listening sessions and surveying began in mid-July and continued through September 2019. The listening sessions consisted of individual, small-group, and large-group conversations with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and leadership and governance bodies.
- Following the completion of the listening sessions, the position specification was finalized and published.
- Well more than a hundred candidate specifications have been reviewed. The candidate pool is now being narrowed so that the search committee may begin the process of in-person interviews beginning the first of November.
We will continue to update the community as the process advances.
Timing on the announcement of specific candidates will remain fluid, as the process evolves. Timing will depend on how fast candidates can be moved through the process and the degree to which candidate confidentiality needs to be safeguarded during the process. That said, the search committee hopes to conclude the search sometime in 1st quarter 2020.
